ESL Listening and Speaking 8 The focus of ESL Listening and Speaking 8 is on developing oral communication skills in English. Classroom activities engage learners in developing listening and speaking strategies for community, workplace and academic contexts. Learners integrate language skills, Skills for Success (Working with Others, Computer and Document Use, Thinking Skills, and Continuous Learning), and inter-cultural skills. By the end of this course, learners will be able to meet the Listening and Speaking outcomes at Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) 8 level.

Note: The topics in this course are closely aligned with the topics in ESL Reading and Writing 8.

Prerequisites

ESL Listening and Speaking 7; or LINC 7; or Assessment scores of CLB 7 Listening and CLB 7 Speaking; or equivalent https://www.vcc.ca/applying/registration-services/english-language-proficiency-requirements/ or Department approval.

What you will learn

  • Building Social Capital (solve problems, listen to conversations at work, initiate conversations with strangers)
  • Participating in Professional Development (listen to a talk on a PD plan, present a PD plan, request and give information on the telephone)
  • Listening to Lectures (retell the steps of a study method, listen to a lecture on a scientific or technological topic, present on a group concept map)
  • Conducting Questionnaires (listen to a group discussion and lecture on an environmental topic, give suggestions for problems)
  • Conducting Focus Groups (listen to steps for conducting focus groups, analyze a focus group discussion, moderate a focus group)
  • Demonstrating Processes (listen to instructional videos on production processes, present a production process, arrange a site visit on the telephone)
  • Analyzing Media (analyze and deconstruct a video ad, listen to public service announcements)
  • Participating in Meetings (listen to steps to running an effective meeting, problem-solve formal meeting questions, role-play a formal meeting)
