The focus of ESL Listening and Speaking 6 is on developing oral communication skills in English. Classroom activities engage learners in developing listening and speaking strategies for community, workplace and academic contexts. Learners integrate language skills, Skills for Success (Working with Others, Computer and Document Use, Thinking Skills, and Continuous Learning), and inter-cultural skills. By the end of this course, learners will be able to meet the Listening and Speaking outcomes at the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) 6 level.

Note: The topics in this course are closely aligned with the topics in ESL Reading and Writing 6.

Prerequisites

ESL Listening and Speaking 5; or LINC 5; or Assessment scores of CLB 5 Listening and CLB 5 Speaking; or equivalent https://www.vcc.ca/applying/registration-services/english-language-proficiency-requirements/ or Department approval.

What you will learn

  • Planning Outings (use telephone strategies, role play telephone calls, make invitations)
  • Discussing Finances (read about handling money, read about personal debt in Canada)
  • Giving Instructions (apply for a student loan, give financial planning instructions, give suggestions about financial planning)
  • Negotiating and Decision Making (watch a video on human rights, talk on the phone about human rights, negotiate in groups)
  • Giving Presentations (talk about using visuals and presentations, give a human rights presentation)
  • Participating in Media (lead a conversation, conduct a radio interview, role-play a radio talk show)
  • Discussing Culture (listen to a conversation with a leader, evaluate websites, present an issue and a solution)
  • Adapting to Workplace Cultures (listen to a discussion on workplace appreciation, discuss workplace scenarios, give instructions for dealing with office issues or with a bully at work)
