ESL Reading and Writing 5

The focus of ESL Reading and Writing 5 is on developing reading and writing communication skills in English. Classroom activities engage students in developing reading and writing strategies using community, workplace and academic contexts. Learners integrate language skills, Skills for Success (Working with Others, Computer and Document Use, Thinking Skills, and Continuous Learning), and intercultural skills. By the end of this course, students will be able to meet the Reading and Writing outcomes at the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 5 level.

Note: Reading and Writing courses are closely aligned with the topics in Listening and Speaking courses.

Prerequisites

LINC 4; or Assessment scores of CLB 4 Reading and CLB 4 Writing; or equivalent https://www.vcc.ca/applying/registration-services/english-language-proficiency-requirements/ or Department approval.

What you will learn

• Planning for Lifelong Learning (take notes on and write about different learning styles, read a brochure, fill in a registration form)
• Reading Instructions (read how to safely perform a basic task, read a chart, write a paragraph)
• Reporting Incidents (read and write about work-related incidents)
• Writing Workplace Emails (read a letter, write emails to ask for advice and give a response)
• Responding to Texts (read and write about Indigenous languages, search for information, take notes)
• Reading and Writing Paragraphs (read an e-mail, write a paragraph about a note-worthy person)
• Researching (search a local website, search a directory, fill in a government form)
• Finding Information (search a website and take notes, write an email expressing interest)
