ESL Listening and Speaking 5

The focus of ESL Listening and Speaking 5 is on developing oral communication skills in English. Classroom activities engage learners in developing listening and speaking strategies for community, workplace and academic contexts. Learners integrate language skills, Skills for Success (Working with Others, Computer and Document Use, Thinking Skills, and Continuous Learning), and inter-cultural skills. By the end of this course, learners will be able to meet the Listening and Speaking outcomes at Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) 5 level.

Note: Reading and Writing courses are closely aligned with Listening and Speaking courses.

Prerequisites

LINC 4; or Assessment scores of CLB 4 Listening and CLB 4 Speaking; or equivalent https://www.vcc.ca/applying/registration-services/english-language-proficiency-requirements/ or Department approval.

• Interviewing for a Job (watch job interviews; make interview questions and interview a peer)
• Phoning for Health Information (listen to a conversation; phone a friend; phone for information)
• Understanding & Giving Instructions on Workplace Safety
• Asking for advice in a workplace
• Storytelling (listen to a newcomer's experience; present about a personal story)
• Connecting with Others (listen to a news report about a cultural event; phone an organization to ask for information)
• Presenting in Groups (listen to a newscast about community services; create a newscast on a business or commercial service)
• Discussing Current Events (listen to a newscast on a current issue; exchange opinions in groups)
