Students explore the principles of modern and contemporary dance with an emphasis on anatomical efficiency, spinal articulation, floor work, spatial complexity, movement through space and complex rhythmical patterns. Structured Improvisation is used to explore the principles of technique. All classes are accompanied by a percussionist to support development of sophisticated rhythmical sense and musicality.

This course is part of the full-time Dance Program.

  • Anatomical efficiency: simultaneous, successive and sequential sequencing
  • Understanding Effort
  • Dynamic quality of movement: feeling, tone, texture
  • Supporting movement function through body awareness and internal connectivity
  • Advanced modern and contemporary vocabulary: systematic progression from floor to jumping
  • Space – investigating kinesphere, spatial intent, dimensions and planes of movement
  • Musicality: becoming familiar with alternative rhythms and developing internal musical impulse
  • Structured Improvisation
