The focus of ESL Reading and Writing 6 is on developing reading and writing communication skills in English. Classroom activities engage students in developing reading and writing strategies using community, workplace and academic contexts. Learners integrate language skills, Skills for Success (Working with Others, Computer and Document Use, Thinking Skills, and Continuous Learning), and intercultural skills. By the end of this course, students will be able to meet the Reading and Writing outcomes at the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 6 level.

Note: Reading and Writing courses are closely aligned with ESL Listening and Speaking courses.

Prerequisites

ESL Reading and Writing 5; or LINC 5; or Assessment scores of CLB 5 Reading and CLB 5 Writing; or equivalent https://www.vcc.ca/applying/registration-services/english-language-proficiency-requirements/ or Department approval.

What you will learn

  • Organizing Schedules (read about organizing principles, research goal setting, write an email)
  • Budgeting (read about personal debt maps, create a budget)
  • Using Financial Statements (read financial brochures, write an email request/invitation, send a thank-you email)
  • Applying Information (use an online dictionary, take notes while listening, make a formal complaint, fill out a form)
  • Participating in Public Issues (summarize an article, read trends on a major public issue, write an email stating your opinion)
  • Writing & Reviewing Biographies (read a biography, research a notable person and write a biography)
  • Reading Legal Documents (take notes, use online reference tools)
  • Designing Organizational Charts (read a congratulations email, describe organizational positions, create an organizational chart)
