The purpose of this course is to offer broad-based, foundational knowledge and learning for people working or who plan to work in school-age programs. Key concepts include child growth and development, three school-age domains (group games, self-directed social play and creative/fine arts), curriculum/program development, care and guidance best practice and elements of the British Columbia Early Learning Framework.

  • Introduction: Course overview, assignments, participation
    School-Age care in Canada lecture and group discussion/activities
    Child Growth and Development through a school-age lens
    Curriculum Development: Emergent play based, theme based, Reggio-inspired
    Program planning through the 3 school-age domains (Group Games, Self-Directed Social Play and Creative/Fine Arts)
    Guiding Children's Behaviour: Prosocial Skill Development, Safe Spaces, Self-Regulation
    Guiding Children's Challenging Behaviour: Care plans, boundaries, behaviour intervention, license requirements
    The school-age childcare environment, home-like, shared space
    Working with families and the learning community
